The REAL ID deadline is almost upon us. If this is a surprise to you, you’re not alone; while this has been in the works for twenty years, many people are unaware of what they need to know about this new type of identification. Casey Subaru answers the questions you may have about it.

What is REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005, partly as a response to 9/11. It required people to have an enhanced form of ID, which lawmakers said was warranted to improve security and make traveling safer for everyone.

What do I Need a REAL ID for?

If you plan to travel by plane in the U.S., you will need a REAL ID, which will be required to fly on any commercial airline. You’ll also need it to enter certain federal facilities.

When do I Need a REAL ID?

REAL ID goes into effect starting on May 7, 2025. If you have a passport, you can use it in place of a REAL ID on domestic and international flights, but if you don’t, you’ll need a REAL ID sooner rather than later.

How Do I Get a REAL ID in VA?

To get your REAL ID in Virginia, you will have to visit a local DMV office and bring adequate documents to verify:

  • Proof of Identity: A U.S. birth certificate or passport would work.
  • Proof of Legal Presence: For non-U.S. citizens, this could include a visa or permanent resident card.
  • Proof of Virginia Residency: You will need two documents, such as a property deed, mortgage statement, or utility bill.
  • Proof of Social Security number: This document must contain the entire number, not just the last four digits.
